RT (Born Robert Magnus Thompson) utilizes the visual arts as a space of societal reflection and philosophical analysis.
Coming from New York with a background in photo journalism, he shifted gears in 2021 to broaden his approach to the photographic arts.
Attending Florence university of the arts, Robert found himself making pictures in fashion, conceptual, street, and documentary fields. Between his photographic approaches is a commentary which arises centered around twenty first century allures.
With a blend of formal and informal technique, Robert’s imagery sits between the aggresive nature of humanity as well as the sophistication of organic matter.
He is currently studying at the Royal College of art to further develop his photographic practice into a presentation of the human condition.

Artist Statement:

For centuries humans have typically left information between four edges. Paintings, newspapers, posters, screens. The displayed information could be for various reasons, but the four edges localize the attention to the same point in space as the idea. It’s used in science to document occurrences, religion to conjure belief, schools to present, or an interpretation of, knowledge, and digital media to hold attention. A camera transforms whatever information is before it into an idea. This emphasizes a precise finding of poetry on the pavement. The street has a vocabulary and when you learn it you can find the profound phrases it has to offer.

My practice is centered around taking pictures. I do work in other mediums such as painting, music, and print, but pictures allow me to enter a space that challenges normalities. Many viewers say I photograph people, but I believe they turn into elements of a social poetry. The expressions, clothing, visible habits of those in my viewfinder depict ideas rather than a representation of identity. In other words, a photo does not come close to capture the extent of a person’s entire existence but rather a, or a series of conditions.

Photography to me is a collection of methodologies. It acts as a sandbox to navigate situations from various approaches in space. I personally enjoy taking my camera into public settings since it’s where the social dialogue takes place. Whatever messages or information ends up between the four edges is something which interests me, ultimately operating as a display of my condition in that moment as much as the subject. After clicking the shutter I ponder, how is the space and the inhabitants? What are the allures? And why did I even photograph this?
